THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. Every brain injury is different.

Liquid Hope

Liquid Hope tube feed was a game changer for Kyle. He had been on various tube feeds, including Kate Farms but nothing was helping his bowels.

Within the first few days as we transitioned him from regular tube feed to Liquid Hope, his bowels became the right consistency and the bowel program he was on finally started to work and BM's became regular.

After Kyle had been on Liquid Hope for about 9 months we started to all Real Foods Blend to the Liquid Hope.

PROGESTERONE & VITAMIN D

Kyle started taking Progesterone (200mg) topically and Vitamin D (10,000 IU) sublingually daily about 18 months after his accident. Studies show patients who took Progesterone & Vitamin D within the first 6 months of a brain injury had a significantly higher recovery rate.

Progesterone (PROG) and vitamin D (VDH) are both neuroprotective and may be effective in treating traumatic brain injury (TBI)

when used in combination:

  • Progesterone Can protect the brain from injury and may help repair it after an injury. Progesterone can inhibit neuroinflammation, which is an important part of the body's response to TBI.
  • Vitamin D Can modulate inflammation, oxidative stress, and neuronal apoptosis. Vitamin D deficiency is common, especially in the elderly and institutionalized, and can significantly impact recovery after a CNS injury.
  • Combination therapy studies show, patients with severe brain trauma who received both progesterone and vitamin D had a significantly higher recovery rate than those who received only progesterone, and those who received only a placebo.

CBD & THC Tincture

We started Kyle on CBD (sublingually) about 6 months after his accident.  In Sept of 2021, when he started talking, he also became much more aware of his situation and he started to exhibit aggressive behaviors, particularly in the middle of the night. We tried all kinds of antipsychotics and mood altering prescriptions but each medication had  negative side effects so we eventually started to give Kyle a combination of CBD with THC (about 10mg) sublingually each night for his extreme/aggressive behavior. The CBD/THC combination was much more effective for Kyle and did not have any negative side effects.

SaeboStim One E-Stim device

Kyle developed shoulder subluxation a few months after being in the hospital. This SaeboStim One electronic stimulation device completely fixed his shoulder subluxation.

We used this inflatable bathtub to bath Kyle when we initially brought him home from the ICU. It was very effective & easy to give him a bath using this inflatable tub.

We purchased it on Amazon, Click on the picture for a link to the bathtub.

When we brought Kyle home, we did not have a way to shower him because there was no shower or bathtub downstairs.

This was a great alternative until we were able to build him a shower room.

Neuro-IFRAH

Neuro-IFRAH Dorsiflexion foot brace/splint was unlike any other foot splint we had seen or used with Kyle. We had these splints customized for Kyle. They really helped with his walking overall and his range of motion & flexion.

We used the prefabricated Neuro-IFRAH Wrist Hand Orthotic for Kyle. His range of motion was limited because of tone he had in his left hand. This particular orthotic helped to improve Kyles range of motion and kept his hand from contracting.

We used a soft splint (similar to this one pictured above) at night and during the day when he was having extra tone in his right hand.

No matter what splints you choose to use, I highly recommend splinting right away if there is tone or the hands/feet start contracting.

In-home Physical Therapy Mat

I wanted Kyle to have physical therapy every day. He needed to practice sitting edge of mat and building his core strength. This PT mat came in handy when Rehab without Walls worked with him in our home and when his private PT’s came to the house. On the days he didn’t have physical therapy we did our own with him at home using the mat. He eventually learned to sit up on his own and hold himself up in a seated position.

We found this PT mat on Amazon.
